Police caution - detremental to sales trading interview?

Received a police caution for assault after being involved in a scuffle a couple of years ago - will this seriously affect my prospects if i were to be asked this in an interview for a sales trading position? Any opinions and comments greatly appreciated.

  • Be honest! I can’t imagine this coming up in an interview – I’ve certainly never asked (nor been asked) anything like that in an interview. I wouldn’t volunteer it. However, it may well come up in the paperwork if and when you are hired. If so, be honest. Your employer should hear about it from you. If asked and you lie, you could well be fired for dishonesty or breach of contract if it comes to light. This is especially true of FSA registered roles. (I had a colleague fired in a similar situation because he lied and the SEC caught the discrepancy and told his Firm about it). I hope you have a good explanation for what happened and can cast it in a good light – assuming you do, you could say it shows the aggressivity and tenacity needed for sales and trading.

  • Its actually the HR interview that i'm worried about where it will come up. I was asked by HR in an interview before if i have a criminal record - so i guess if that came up i would take your advice and just be honest with it all and hope they will not deprive me of the job because of a silly mistake - but not exactly working in my favour anyway!!
