Answer this questionThx ex-MD response. I'm considering to join a new role in a buy-side firm London office but will eventually return to HK/China in 4-6 yrs time. I intend to focus on Asia ex-Jap investment in the long run. Perhaps a stint in London will be an enhancement, in my view. All work (6 yrs) has been gained in HK so far in foreign banks, despite all higher education gained in UK & Aussie.

Generally speaking, working in London (or NY) is a plus on your CV. Being in a Head / larger office will also give you greater networking opportunities and can lead to tangential job opportunities. That said – the job environment in London right now is tough and your experience is fairly specific. It will be hard to find something here without taking a step sideways (or even backwards) in responsibility and job content. So, what do you want to do next? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you want to end up in Asia / Pacific, then I’d stay in HK and get as much experience and responsibility as you can out there. Yes, you could end up as a specialist but you’ll also be able to get greater responsibility and seniority faster than you could here in London. If you want to do something different or don’t know what you want, then move to London where there is a far greater breadth of job functions. Just bear in mind that currently there may not be the opportunity that you are looking for.
