Am quitting my law firm structured finance paralegal role. What next? Funds, derivatives or risk?

My ideal job would be to sit within the legal team of a hedge fund or asset manager where it seems that the range of exposure is very broad, and perhaps, slightly more commercial. But derivatives documentation appears to be heavily in demand and fairly lucrative, albeit fairly specialised. Can I use the derivatives experience I stand to gain to move into funds in a couple of years? By comparison, which offers the better longterm prospects for a non-qualified lawyer? In the longterm, I'd like to work within the business, so I'm prepared to consider alternative roles, such as risk, but have little idea of what's involved. This would be my first job within a financial institution, so any and all feedback is appreciated. Many thanks.

  • I think that you have answered your own question - go for the derivatives documentation roles. I always recommend using the skills you already have to leverage into new businesse areas. You wil be able to have close contact with the business in documentation and use that to try and move further. Good luck

  • Thank you, this appears to be the general impression I'm getting.
