What should a normal package be for an institutional sales person at a top asset manager? (6 years exp.)

How common is a cap at say 100% of base?

  • Jernmark, To give the most accurate benchmark possible I would have some other questions: - What is the geographical remit for this individual? (pure UK institutional, Europe, EMEA?). Broader remit and possibly fluency in European languages increases potential package somewhat. - Breadth of remit. By this I mean if the individual is developing the Investment Consulting channel alongside a 'direct sales' effort to Corporates/Local Authorities. To answer your question and broadly speaking, in my humble opinion a pure UK Institutional Direct Sales person with demonstrable track record (without mentioning years of exp) would command a basic salary in the region of £70,000 - £90,000 (with European remit I would suggest £80,000 - £100,000). Bonus is rarely capped to 100% and the way bonus is calculated varies between groups. I would say at least half will pay an annual discretionary bonus (loosely related to KPI's) and the remainder may pay annual/quarterly mechanical bonus directly related to mandate wins. Total comp in a good year: UK-centric - £180,000 - 220,000 Pan-Europe - £200,000 - 300,000 Hope that helps

  • I agree with the numbers Tim has quoted. Up until about 6-9 months ago, people with 5-8 years institutional sales experience were like gold dust. Whilst things are slowed down marginally, fewer people are open to changing jobs and so you should still be in a strong position. Depending on how you are currently paid, you may be walking away a bonus in early 2009 - if that's the case there should be some form of gauranteed bonus - some firms will pay this as a sign on bonus - although in current market that is tougher. Otherwise a sizeable shift in your base salary and target bonus and target bonus.

  • For more information, I have Scandi focus with Swedish and English fluency. The breadth of remit would be bringing in new money through direct sales, cross-sales to real-money and third-party distributors. In interviews I have been told there is a 90% cap on bonus and my headhunter adviced me to bid for 75K base. My experience is inst. sales at two major investment banks for just north of 5 years. I have no asset management sales experience. Any difference?

  • Many AM groups are receptive to individuals with your experience but the potential 'cap' on starting salary would probably be because of a lack of any existing relationships with the Investment Consulting community (Watson,Mercer,Hewitt etc). Very rarely do I seen a bonus cap though.
