How to make employers/recruiters to give your application a chance if unemplyed (previously in IB)?

I have lost my job having just a couple of years in IB. Now unemployed and no chance to find anything within my previous bank. Looking for a role in research/buy-side, like many others. How to explain to recruiters/potential employers that I am not working? Will they look at my application at all?

  • They'll want to know what you've been doing with your time apart from looking for work. Study something relevant. Libraries are useful.

  • There are a lot of good people that have lost their jobs so there is no reason to hide that you are unemployed. If you get an interview, make sure you have a good story for why you were let go. Do something interesting with your time off. Don’t just sit around watching TV and bemoaning your fate. If you want a job quickly, I wouldn’t book too much travel but you could certainly take courses – ideally something relevant but you could also do a language or cooking! Or volunteer at something. Just show that you are doing something with your time. It could give you something interesting to put in the “other interests” section of your CV, which in turn could get your CV noticed. You can also highlight in a cover letter that you can start immediately. (I’m assuming you are no longer on gardening leave nor need stock / options bought out). If a bank doesn’t have a hiring freeze, this could be a point in your favour.

  • I agree, you must find things to do. As a headhunter I will tell you there's going to be two types of people who fell overboard during this mess. Those who used the time to upgrade their skills by reading, formal education and practising new things. and...those who didn't.
