  • please dont do the aca..a waste of 3 years number crunching, you'll be working at the level of fresh uni grads who didnt make IBs..just apply for a top MBA and go for the associate roles..or apply to big4 corporate finance roles, big4s love banking guys, fact, so you should have a good chance, then move back to a bank when you gained enough experience..

  • Thanks to all. I never thought of an MBA! I have an MSc in Finance. But it seems to be a shame to throw away front office exp i have gained over the last 18 months. I suppose there just aren't anymore roles in front office for structured finance. How would i go about doing ACA - via a bank or accountancy firm??

  • Agree with Alan that it must be ACA to stand a chance. However doesnt have to be Big4 if you get experience in the corporate finance team in practice.

  • No – ACCA won’t really help you. How senior are you? If you are junior, then go get an MBA and start over at the beginning in M&A. This is the easiest and most direct route since everyone in M&A will currently view you as completely unskilled. If you are more senior (or don’t want to go the MBA route) then you are unlikely to be able to make a direct move. One idea would be to try to leverage your understanding of the financial sector / mortgage market and work in capital markets covering the financial institutions. Then in a couple of years when you have built up an understanding of the coverage side of the business and hopefully have relationships with bank clients you can try to use those relationships to move into M&A. You’d have to do this within your current employer as I doubt an external employer would be willing to help you make the move. It isn’t obvious though and will be a long slog.

  • acca will NEVER get you into front office. It is only ACA from Big 4 with first time passes than can help you
