Why is it that 19 year old Essex boys get jobs at interdealer brokerages?

...whilst a 28 year old with a 2.1 MA Hons from a Russell Group University and International Business Experience from Multiple Continents can not?

  • Listen if you want to put education as your selling point dont come with "im from a rusell group uni". So what!! you want to take the education route then you need to be at least from the "golden triangle" unis- oxbridge, lse, imperial. then its more understandable! And dont forget the bottom line. if he can make more money then thats all that matters. thats the industry pal !! swim or sink

  • Because they can sell and you cannot? Because they enjoy going out and getting drunk with clients 4/5 nights a week and you would probably not?

  • Just because they are from essex does not mean they are dumb. And just because you are from a Russell Group university does not make you smart. Dont forget, most people in top unis are only there because their parents paid for education privately, and most of them have poor social skills . In Essex, the people have real world knowledge, essential for success in the business world. They are also entrepreneurial and open minded.

  • Well. Thanks for you answers. "Why would a man of such worldy experience want to lower himself to barrow boy brokerage firms?" ...because in London I'm poor, brokerages pay high salaries and from what I read investment banks wouldn't be interested in me.

  • Because jobs at these firms don't really require much analytical and multi-faceted work that graduates with real economy experience have. The MDs are usually intimidated by graduates and also the 19 yr olds have a few things in his favour: 1. They are young and impressionable, so the managers can "mould" them into the company fit- just like any other business. 2. The job doesn't require much academic intelligence - just street "smarts" and risk taking, yobbish essex culture.

  • Because you probably dont suit the culture. Do you like football and stripclubs? Also why would a man of such worldy experience want to lower himself to barrow boy brokerage firms?

  • If you're applying for the same job that a 19-year old is, they may think you're too overqualified for the role and might get bored easily.

  • Because you would expect to be a desk head by 30 so 2 years doesn't give you much time no matter how good you might be.
