From accounting background about to complete my ACCA, what are my chances to get into Financial Services!

I am a young ambitious woman, shifted to the UK about 3 years back, started with a few temp roles in accounting. I then got a role with a private education company as a Assistant Management Accountant, in a span of 9 months, I was promoted to the position of Management Accountant, I left the company about 6 months after that as I wanted to explore greater areas of accounting and hence joined a big group as a Financial Accountant. The job hasn't quite turned out to be as challenging and interesting as I expected it to be. At every stage, I am always on top of everything I have to do. I have touched other areas in the job, to keep myself busy and motivated, however, its still not that good. I have a considerable educational background, wherein after high secondary (A levels) I started ACCA from scratch and jus recently have given my last exam awaiting positive results this month. I have been determined and dedicated to work hard at each stage. I feel I have the potential to do a lot more, and have very high standards for myself, and hence I feel this job is not for me. I want to now get into Financial Services/Investment Management with the aim to explore the more corporate end and work my way in the respective sector. I feel I do have the drive and commitment but haven’t till date got the opportunity to prove myself. I am now looking forward to my next step, however, am not really sure about it. I have a couple of options in mind. I can start temping in the Financial Services Sector just to get my foot in and then probably with my skills I could get an opportunity to be permanent. I know if I try to apply directly for a permanent role in the Financial Services Sector, I will probably get rejected as I do not have relevant related experience. Please advise. Thank You.

  • Hi Sarah thanks for that. No, I dont have a degree. Does that mean I can't get into Financial Services at all, would you recommend temping at any stage! Thanks a lot.

  • Unfortunately, the ACCA isn't banks' preferred qualification - most will look for an ACA, or failing that a CIMA. If you want to get a job in financial services you will also realistically need a degree (it's not clear whether you have this from your question). If you already have a degree, consider studying the CFA. This may help you find a role in investment managemnet.
