Are you a fat kitten?

6 May 2008

Alongside its usual fare of scantily clad females and men baring expensive watches, Arena magazine claims to have unearthed a new phenomenon in investment banks: the fat kitten.

Unlike ageing fat cats, fat kittens are apparently bankers of “tender years” and “portly appearance”, caused by years of “old school indolence, financed by years of excessive bonuses and inordinate stress levels in the office”.

JPMorgan and KPMG are cited kitten breeding grounds – despite Jamie Dimon’s decision to reopen the bank’s gyms and sponsor a fat employee to lose weight. Research released earlier this year suggested financial services professionals are more likely to be overweight than those in other industries.

Is Arena onto something? Does banking cause corpulence? And is podginess perfectly ok when you’re taking home a six-figure pay cheque? Chew the fat below.

You can count the number of fit and good looking people in a typical IBank on the fingers of one hand (or maybe two in some exceptional cases).

  • I am glad that efinancialcareers is at last tackling the serious issues facing Financial Services nowadays.

If it were legal, I could talk about the impact of weight on employability.

  • Everyone I work with is highly motivated and competitive, therefore the vast majority keep themselves in great shape. In fact, I'm one of the few without a personal trainer! (though still fighting weight...)

  • I have gained a stone a year since starting in banking. Anyone with advice on how to keep the weight off while working 15 hour days would be much appreciated.

  • Eating sugar is a great way of reducing stress. You only have to look at the number of Krispy Kremes consumed on the trading floor to figure out why weight can be an issue.

  • yo 18 stoner, two words: circuit training...on average I go to the gym twice a week, no fixed days because you never now what to expect.  My sessions are a max an hour which includes changing.  The key is to do your program without any interruptions.  Finally, you are what you eat, no soda, I lost 40 lbs in 9 months.  I went from a 42in waist to a 38in...On top of that I played rugby in the summer.  Good luck…

  • This phenomenon is not restricted to investment banking. Earlier this year ING estimated that 30% of the adult population are now obese. Studies suggest that obese women suffer more than obese men in the workplace, with 27% of obese people saying their ability to work was affected by their weight.

  • Lol - no one working at ING can afford to eat so obesity not a problem...  and yes headhunter given a normal size person and fat I'd choose normal (of course with some politically correct reason) anytime, who wants to stare at a fat, sweaty load of blubber with VPL/trousers under gut issues every day?!
