The French phenomenon

4 May 2007

How will the City cope if Sarkozy wins this weekend's election and all the Gallic bankers go back home?

Nicolas Sarkozy, the favourite to win this Sunday's French presidential election, has urged the country's expat population to make a go of it in France if he wins.

Whether they'll take him up on the offer is open to question. But if they do, the City could find itself deprived of what has become a valuable source of talent. Official figures suggest there are around 300,000 French people in the UK, most of them in London.

We suspect a fair few of the Français of working age are engaged in finance-related activities – BNP Paribas alone employs more than 400 French people in its Harewood Avenue office.

Most importantly, French talent is underpinning London's leading position in the OTC derivatives markets. "Easily a third of our roles go to French people," says Rachel Biernaka, head of the quants desk at London recruiter Huxley Finance. "Their education system is incredibly strong and they all want to work here because there aren't many quant roles in Paris."

Another recruiter alleges that 80% of quants at Goldman are French and that some banks have taken to specifying that candidates fielded for quant positions should originate on the other side of the English Channel.

There could be pain in store, therefore, if French quants flood back to Paris on a wave of Sarko-induced patriotism. But Dean Looney, head of the financial services team at Huxley, says this is unlikely: "It's not about national pride, it's about furthering your career. And the opportunities are in London."

If all the Brits who say nasty things about the French knew what the French think of them, they would be much more nasty.

  • Dean Looney is right, the best jobs are here and I know that Sarkozy's election - if it happens - won't change anything; we are staying here until we retire. Vive Londres!

  • French women, especially should always be welcome in London, their chic and glamour in the office certainly alleviates the drudgery of a Monday morning!
From a purely aesthetic perspective hope Mme Royal is victorious..

  • Mme Royal is the best. Sarko elected or not won't change anything... This is not in Paris where 500% bonus is... Vive Royal...

  • I think you really overestimate the influence of the election of Sarkozy. This guy is just an ersatz of Berlusconi or Aznar and wont change the overall situation in France.

London is def the place to be for good career prospects. The only thing missing here is quality of life. Paris is the place to be when you want a more balanced life style

  • Non-story. The french aren't patriotic, they are just in it for themselves, hence the cheese eating surrender monkey tag they get.

  • Quants, derivatives, if you think that Royal is the best, go back to France! People suffering there need you to share your bonus with them!

  • Dream on, nobody is going to go back for the blue eyes of Sarko... there nothing exciting to do in France, they turned the country into a giant lazy Disneyland, except that nobody wants to work there for the tourists - too much pride to serve the others!

Pay will never be the same and you can't work with the French in France, they are only just about bearable here in London... and I know what I'm talking about, I'm French and working both in Paris and London!

  • Send in the Garde Nationale with baïonnettes of course…

No, more seriously allow people to let their dogs poo in the streets so that London becomes as dirty as Paris… and make sure that people in London become as unpleasant as the Parisians, especially in the morning and at lunch and in the afternoon and … also in the evening… make sure they slam doors in your face and be rude to you for no reason… you might then get life here a little less polite, civilized and pleasant!

  • Reading all this, one thing is sure, London is unfortunately the city where French people are the most arrogant...and am sure Londoners would be happy to see some of them go back home...
