  • So, to be a bit more precise, what can a graduate expect to earn entering into an operations role in, for example, a hedge fund or even hedge fund advisory?

Also, the article states that it's hard to move from the back office to the front within a bank or hedge fund. But, what if it's the case that a graduate has worked in the back office of a hedge fund for a year or so (for lack of a better front office offer) and then decides to apply for a front office/analyst role in a different firm? Would that one year of back office experience do any good on a cv when setting out for that front office role?

  • I have a similar issue to James. I have not been able to secure a role within a front office position this year. Surely, gaining experience in the back office would be more attractive to potential employers than not gaining any experience in the financial world at all?

    Advice would be welcomed.

  • I work in ops at the moment, in otc equity derivatives settlements at  big asian bank in london.. i got in through lookign around on sites, not a big grad scheme.  i think its a great palce to start, iv learnt a lot about products and how they are structured, a great foothold into the industry and many opportunities to move into traders assistant positions, or product control, or even trading.  you learn a lot ont he job and you are constantly in touch with middle office as well as traders.

  • Thanks Anonymous,

I was hoping that was the case, although most of the official 'blurb' suggests this is not the case. It is good to hear from people who have direct experience...

I would welcome anybody else's opinion if they can share their experiences.
