ALPHA FEMALE: Summer holiday – relaxation or stress?

24 July 2008

Anneke deBoer

In order to decompress from a stressful job, I feel that you need two consecutive weeks of holiday. Maybe this is why Americans are so stressed and Europeans – comparatively – more relaxed.

Many Americans get only two weeks’ vacation a year and it is often frowned upon to take them consecutively. In London, the expectation is that you will take two consecutive weeks over the summer. If you don’t take two weeks' holiday, people think you are at best odd or at worst inconsiderate, as your remaining vacation days need to be taken into account throughout the rest of the year. Holidays are timed to coincide with your client base – the Scandinavians go off in July, the French in August.

As was highlighted in the Jérôme Kerviel affair, many in trading (and some controlling functions) should be required to take their holidays. This makes it harder to hide 'rogue positions' and allows inaccuracies to come to light. Perhaps this will now be more actively enforced.

Assuming you do take a holiday, what do you do with it? This is a time to get away from the rigours of daily life and reconnect with your family and friends. But do high powered, highly skilled people really do nothing on holiday? Do they know how to switch off?

My vote is no. People who are successful in the finance world are rarely those who can sit still for long on a beach towel. Much as we like to think we can spend time on a romantic beach with a book doing nothing, after a day or two it becomes boring. Itchy fingers start – and out come the mobile phone and Blackberry.

Even those who attempt to have a quiet holiday will have their share of stress. Stuck in a traffic jam on your way to Cornwall can feel like five hours of hell. Or, assuming that you aren’t in the league of flying business class with your family, the stress of flying in the back of the plane with toddlers in tow may make you wish you were at work and not on holiday.

Some younger or single people will go on adventure holidays. I had colleagues who took parachuting lessons, went on cycling trips, or skiing. For them, this was relaxation.

In my experience, most people’s holidays fall somewhere in the middle. They go somewhere to relax but end up scheduling their days to keep busy. It’s all about keeping the adrenaline going – but voluntarily.

  • Err, I spend maybe 30 minutes a day writing on forums and surfing the web. Another idiotic comment so typical to eFN, people thinking you need to be only working non-stop when at your desk to produce results. Time spent working and performance / results have little correlation. In fact I probably do better at my job using this as an outlet to vent, hence come across relaxed and happy in person.

  • CitG - I agree, Henry is playing the Devils Advocate!! Why shouldn't people look forward to their weekend! Just because someone says on FB that they are "looking forward to Friday" doesn't mean that they aren't in face working harder than you. You say your hard working and slogging it out at your desk to make it big however from what you have mentioned I find it hard to believe that inbetween making comments on here and the time you spend on facebook you actually do any work! The reason why you don't complain might be cause you aren't actually doing any work!!!!

  • How on earth have I "wrecked the country"? The credit crunch was caused by lazy, stupid people who can't afford stuff hence pile it all onto credit cards they're then unable to pay off and take out mortgages they can't afford. The fault lies entirely with these stupid people for taking out these loans, not the people who provided them who just knew a smart way to exploit the vulnerable.

  • So the country is going down the pan because we're all lazy and obsessed with going on holiday all the time?? WRONG! In fact, it's probably people like you who have wrecked this country with their selfish, greedy attitudes. Try walking through Liverpool St. station and lecturing anyone in a suit about their work ethic - I'm sure you'll get an interesting response.

  • Christianaid, I go on vacations, and never said I didn't. I just said the British culture of being obsessed with going on holiday as much as possible and hating the concept of having to work utterly pathetic. I'm all for work hard and play hard, not do the bare amount possible to get by and live for holidays. People here have such a bad attitude, which is why this country is going down the pan, whereas China and India will take over as people there have the right attitude and work ethic.

  • Henry, weren't you boasting of "taking 1st class Virgin Atlantic to exotic destinations and stay in 5* hotels, while my friends take EasyJet to Barcelona." ????

In this thread you're "sacrificing wasting time on holiday now to rise up the ladder"?? I think you should come clean, son...

  • Oh look, its good old Henry.....

Can everyone please ignore this egotistical pr*t who seems to spend his time stoking up arguments by placing controversial comments on efinancial. If you look back through some of the previous articles you will continue to see some of Henry's farcical comments.

On a previous log we identified him as a recruiter who seeks information from real City workers about pay scales and working hours etc. so please dont respond to him.

    Henry - get a life.

  • Indeed the 20s are your best years of your life - I'm living the best life ever by enjoying, doing well and reaping the rewards of my career, and sleeping with lots of girls. Better to do that then chill out and take the maximum possible holiday instead of making more money, as I'll be more sorted come ages 35-85 - 50yrs, a long time ya know. "All the girls will have found their man in their twenties", what are you nuts? In London the majority of hot high-quality girls are still single in their late 20s because they'll have similarly worked hard and not settled down yet. I'm looking forward to hitting 30, knowing there'll be a ton of eligible girls out there to settle down with. And I maintain good friendships with an active social life.

I have no problem with people enjoying life by taking holidays, I just sometimes get utterly sick of the British culture of moaning about having to work, hating work and just doing it to pay the bills, and wanting to be a perpetual lazy loafer. If I log into Facebook and click recent updates today every other status is "Thank god its Friday!" "Bring on the weekend, yay!" "No more work for 2 days!!", its just pathetic.
