Hot but boring jobs you may not have thought of

26 May 2009

Sarah Butcher

Things are picking up a bit, but unless you’re a senior M&A banker times are still hard. If you’re at the stage where you’re toying with becoming a security guard, you may want to consider one of the options below.

1. Asset servicing/ corporate actions

It is not very exciting, but there are lots of jobs the corporate actions area of asset servicing according to Mike Hartwell, managing director of operations search firm Hartwell Buck. “Virtually every organization is recruiting into this space, either to work on their existing processes or to change the processes they’ve already got,” says Buck.

For those who don’t know, corporate actions professionals are responsible for collecting dividend and coupon payments for securities owners. Unfortunately, Buck says most jobs go to people who’ve spent years doing this.

2. Investment marketing/RFP and sales support process

Filling out RFP (request for proposal) forms for fund managers soliciting new investments is not the most interesting job in financial services, but it is solid and there is hiring. “Funds are trying to generate more revenue so they are interested in adding to RFP teams,” says Clare O’Brien of recruitment firm FSS City. Again, experience of such things is preferable.

3. Compliance/KYC

Know your client (KYC) jobs are interesting if you unearth Osama Bin Laden, but mostly involve administrative work. They are hot, according to Andrew Hanson, head of risk management and compliance at Robert Walters. “KYC professionals go through a number of relevant checks on the background of a client to confirm that they are who they say they are,” he explains.

If you once worked in the front office and want to do these (less exciting) jobs, you will still need to work very hard at getting one. “So many people have been made redundant from operations jobs that there are a lot of people out there with exactly the right kind of experience,” says Hartwell.

  • The thing about going from front to back is it's a very different skill set. Less about personality (or indeed ability) more hard earned ultra obscure knowledge, like where you left that legal opinion from 2 years ago, the one that Derek used to keep in his desk in the old building etc etc

  • I'm sorry Salman, but that is incomprehensible.

  • Churb - I think personality in the front office died a long time ago. You'll find a lot more personality in the MO/BO (with a few in the FO -in F&O).
Too many people with oversized egos in small pants in the FO.

  • If you put "boring" into the keyword search, two jobs show up!

  • Most people who have ever worked in corporate actions have spent their entire careers trying to get out of it. It is not just about the never-ending tedium of such roles, but about the swallowing of pride in applying for one.

  • and no one in finance, god forbid, should swallow their pride these days.....no reason for that. after all, it's only the best and the brightest, right? and all that "personality" in the FO..... what a joke.  let's bring financial careers back to the 1970s; well-paid and competent in an industry that's regulated into submission.

  • Are there any Internal Audit jobs out there? I used to do Internal Audit contract roles before the market went pear-shaped but can't get any work since Jan. '09.
