£42k base?! God, may as well have not worked hard at uni and ended up in accountancy!

Oh no!!. An entry level salary....
Three obvious points to remember:
1. Like most things in life, banking comp is structured in a pyramid. With few people at the top earning large, and many at the bottom earning solid but not exorbitant amounts. So use the pyramid as a source of motivation to work hard and progress.
2. This industry is cyclical.
3. You have to genuinely love the job. To do it only for the money only leads you to resent the sacrifices you have to make to progress. Not every part will be barrels of laughs. But you have to recognise that there are 1000 other jobs that are nowhere near as interesting as working in banking.
